MIXED EVENTS: Pairs, Night Pennants

Twenty-eight pairs teams competed in the 2018 District Mixed Pairs Championsip.

In an excellent competition hosted by Algester Sports Club the eventual winners were Denise Mackey and Paul Gilbert (both from Algester). They defeated Ipswich contenders and family combination Aileen Knight and Daniel Knight 23-12.

Congratulations Denise and Paul. It must be said that Paul has now won this event for two consecutive years, also being 2017 Champion, albeit with different partners.

Thank you to all who competed - the sportsmanship exhibited throughout the District Mixed Pairs Championship was first class. Speaking of first class, no one could deny that Algester Sports Club (host and event sponsor) certainly know how to run an event. Thank you Algester.

Denise and Paul went on to represent Cunningham at the Zone 2 play-offs held at Laidley Bowls Club against the best of the best from the Downs District. In a credible performance under extra-ordinary gusty westerly conditions, Denise and Paul succumbed in a tight fought battle to their more fancied Downs rivals. Denise and Paul - You did Cunningham proud.

The 2018 Mixed Night Pennant attracted 12 teams from across District all vying for the coveted flag. The competition was staged in two sections. Section 1 saw Darra Maroon top the ladder undefeated while their fancied opponents Swifts Blue came in second. At the end of the fixtures in Section 2 Swifts Red dominated (also undefeated) with Corinda coming in second.

The two Sections then met in the Play-offs. Corinda (sect 2) took on Swifts Blue (Sect 1) in the elimination final with Swifts Blue earning the right to advance.

The other semi-final saw Darra Maroon take on top of Section 2 ladder winners Swifts Red. Darra stormed home winners 63-28.

The preliminary final was now set to be an intra club brawl. Swifts Red V Swifts Blue. Swifts Blue showed their class to overcome their club companions Swifts Red 59-31.

The stage was set for the two top of the ladder Section 1 teams to battle it out in the Grand Final. Darra Maroon V Swifts Blue. In an extremely tight encounter there remained nothing between the two sides for the majority of the game. It was only in the last three ends that Darra Maroon turned up the heat and overpowered Swifts Blue. Darra Maroon were crowned 2018 District Mixed Night Pennant Champions with a 58-46 win.

Congratulations Darra Maroon and thank you Darra Cementco Bowls Club for hosting this superbly run District event.
